Enjoy approximately 500 trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachain Trail. Many trails are accessed from Skyline Drive. Some short trails lead to a waterfall or viewpoint. Some longer and more difficult trails penetrate deep into the forest and wilderness. Several publications that list hiking trails and maps are available at the Park Visitor Centers. To Backpack in the park you must obtain a permit from the Ranger Station. There is no cost for this permit, but a fine will be levied on those caught without a permit.
